Self-assessment scare for the self-employed

Self-employed people risk being fined for paying their taxes late because of a technical glitch in HMRC’s systems, accountants have warned.

Accountants at Blick Rothernberg have said that HMRC sent many freelancers tax bills that omitted the “payment on account” fee, an advance tax for the year ahead that most self-employed people have to pay.

A spokesperson for the firm said all freelancers should check the amount on their tax bill to be certain.
